DIY Block Printed Christmas Wrapping Paper.

As the trend towards artisanal wrapping paper continues Mike Is Bored presents: Printing your own wrapping paper.

Needed is:
Linoleum Cutter
Linoleum Blocks
Soft Rubber Brayer (AKA that roller thingy)
Graph Paper.
Paint of some sort.
Other paper to print on (TBD)

Well I guess we can start out with how to make any wallpaper pattern in case trees are not your thing.

1) The stately square without which wallpaper is but the fevered dream of a madman. 6x6 in this case. Easy to see how we can line them buggers up to make a consistent pattern. If you don't understand how to do that you can look at your trusty graph paper for an example. 

2) Now to modify the square. Any square in the graph paper can be slid to the opposite side and they will still lock up just fine. 

3) Ah. Looks like a tree already. 

4) draft of the final image is done on paper. 

5) GOOOLDEN RINGS!.... or a cut out of the pattern to trace on to the linoleum sheet.  

6) after tracing on the pattern on to the linoleum I cut it out with a box cutter. 

7) cut away all the parts of the linoleum that are not the tree using a Linoleum Cutter 

8) Roll on your ink and stamp away. 

9) I added decorations to the trees using nail polish. 

10) after making the original I had the photo printed as an engineering print at staples.

Please keep in mind that most people on your gift list might prefer squid or octopus wrapping paper.

USA DIY T shirt printing. Sticker Stencil.

Started by printing this image on Full-Sheet Labels for Inkjet Printers After printing I cut out the stencil letters and affixed the label to an ironed t-shirt. I rolled on some Speedball screenprinting ink using my block printing roller. Once dry I removed the paper and Ironed the area on both sides to fix the ink. the shirt is wet and still has some paper stuck to it not all came off well at first and a washed it off. will post a better photo later.

You will need: A t-shirt, paper, linoleum, a cutting set for the linoleum (i used the ABIG), a roller or small paint brush, and screen printing ink. I picked up the block printing stuff at a local art store for like $20 total. The paint usually goes for around $8. Plus you already have a t-shirt.

Start by carving your block with the design you want. I sketch the design in pencil first and then carve out the parts that i did not draw on. You are making a negative when you carve so whatever you carve out will not print.

Test the design on piece of paper first.







Paint a thin layer of screen printing ink on the block. Stretch the shirt over a piece of cardboard and then press the block down.



Once the ink is dry iron for 3-5 min on each side.

Cheap DIY Screen Print your own Minnesota in the style of Metallica shirt

Saw this shirt at a D4 show and could not find it anywhere on the net so I thought I would make my own.

you will need:

Blank t-shirt.
Screen printing ink.
Cardboard from paper pad.
Printer.
Iron.
Paint brush
corrugated cardboard.
razorblade.
Masking tape.

Print out the image at the bottom of this post.
Pin it to the cardboard and cut out the letters with an razor.
Stretch the t-shirt over the corrugated cardboard and center the stencil over the middle and pin it all together.
Cut Masking tape out to fill the "O" and "A".
Brush the paint onto the stencil.
Let the paint dry.
Disassemble and Iron the paint as instructed on the paint container.

DIY: Screen printing a hat the cheapest way.

You will need:
Screen printing ink (i used superball that cost about $5 at a local shop but you can probs get it online), a paint brush, a nylon, krazy glue, push pins, a hat (preferably a free hat you don't like.... yet) and some sort of frame. Of course all this can be done on a t-shirt as well.

Also props to craftgrrl for the concept of using nylons.


Start with a hat that needs re-purposing like this cooperate gecko hat:
I don't show this but I blacked out the gecko with black screen printing ink.


Draw your image on a 3x5" note card.


Stretch the Nylon around a frame and tape it down:


Trace the image onto the nylon with a black pen:


Take the card away and cover the lines with Krazy Glue:


Once the glue has dried test the screen on a piece of paper:


If you are satisfied with the image cut out the section of the screen:


Pin the screen to the hat and paint it:



Remove the screen and touch up the design:

Wash the screen let it dry and repeat.
