Spliting the jade plant.
We took chance and broke our jade plant in half because it was getting too tall and not branching. Here is the progression of the new branches.

ReplyDeleteYikes... I have a jade plant I pinched off on my honeymoon. It has been growing for almost 5 years, and it's not branching. I want branches, but I hesitate to do this for fear it will die! I love the idea of having this plant as long as I've been married.
ReplyDeleteIt will never die from a cutting... the only way to kill a jade plant is to over water it since they're African plants and they can survive droughts because they store huge amounts of water in leaves and stems

ReplyDeleteI have a jade plant...really, just one stem! It has scoliosis and no leaves until about 10" from the top of the dirt. The lower half of the stem is brownish, and there are air roots. There are only 6 pairs of leaves at the top. Is there anything I can do to encourage branches? I dont' want branches at the top. It's in a tiny pot, I was thinking maybe I should plant it deeper, but google says not to. I've put it in a pop bottle terarium because it kept falling over LOL
ReplyDeleteThat happened to a cutting I had. It looked like a 10 inch Y. Finally I got brave and cut the trunk down to about 4 inches. Then I cut the 2 Y stems into 2 separate cuttings. Let the 2 cuttings heal off about 10 days and then stuck them down into the same pot as the now short leafless trunk. Then I waited... and waited. At first the two leafy cuttings didnt look good. But over months the leaves felt firm and plump. After many months suddenly 3 multi leaf sprouts emerged from the top of the bare trunk. It's a slow process but now I have a pot of 3 small but leafy jade plants.
DeleteMy granddaughter now has jade plants that were started from, my grandma’s, her great great grandma’s jade. Fifth generation jade. The history, like the stories I just read is dear to my heart. In fact it is such a cute story it would make a cute children’s book. watch for it 😘 Deanna
