I found this bowl at a garage sale for 50 cents and though it might be a good casting material. I would like to know what it is made of though. Mine is not in as good of shape as the one pictured on the right.
What I know:
It does not specify silver on copper or sterling silver so I do not think it is one of those.
It is heavy. A rough estimate of density of the base is 9.5 g/ml
Lead — Density: 11.35
TIN — Density: 7.287
Zinc — Density: 7.04
Nickel — Density: 8.912
Copper - Density 8.96
The base:
It is dull gray color in the middle.
It is silver plated. I would guess pewter. I melted it down and cast it into this lost crayon casting
The sides:
Under the silver plate it looks a little yellow like a brass or other copper containing metal.
I would guess brass.
Please comment with your thougths. Or reply at this forum.
Whatever it is made of it seems to be a pretty good price at 50cents for 1.5lbs.

Two row pale and cascade small scale brewing experiment.
I am experimenting with making the simplest beer I can imagine. The eventually goal is to brew beer that i have grown myself but I need to wait till next sprint to get my barley going. This is a great cheap way to work. Without the cost of hops or extract I am able to make these 1L batches of beer for ~$3
9/22/09
1.75lbs two row pale extracted then boiled down to 1.25L. (small scale all grain brewing extraction by this method)
0.5oz dried homegrown cascade (60min) 0.1oz dried homegrown cascade (5min). no hydrometer. I would guess it was too high though. put in secondary 10/3/09. results were not hoppy enough for a good pale.
9/26/09
1.75lbs two row pale extracted then boiled down to 1.75L, 0.3oz dried homegrown cascade(60min) O.G. 1050. put in secondary 10/3/09. results were not hoppy enough for a good pale. tasted just like above pale.
10/20/09
1.00lb two row pale. 0.5lb rye. stuck mash.
11/11/09
1.25lbs two row pale. 1 cup rye. 0.5oz cascade pellets. O.G. 1060. 0.5 gallon batch.
bottled 12/13 no secondary
11/12/09
5.5lbs two row pale. 0.5lb rye. 1.25oz cascade pellets. O.G. 1060. 1.75 gallon batch.
bottled 12/13 no secondary.
At bottling tasted great. may be the one i make a label for->
2/3/10
5lbs two row pale, 0.5 medium crysta, 0.5 rye, 2oz cascade O.G. 1060
By far the best batch. Crystal added a little sweetness that balances the rye
7/19/10
4lbs two row pale. 0.5 medium crystal, 0.5 rye. leftover malt from previous batches that did not fit in the fermentation containers.

Calvin and hobbes themed snowman g20 protest
We can make copies of these signs.
As might be obvious this did not happen
people keep getting here by googling "how to make calvin and hobbes snow men." I think it should be pretty self explanatory or I would add details here. in any event buy this book:The Complete Calvin and Hobbes and buy me a copy while you are at it. I want it bad but can't seem to pony up the $ since i have most of the content in other books. for those of you seriously into the snowmen specifically there is always this:

This is not an endorsement that you can grow beer in your yard. I have had some success with wheat but have yet to try the barley. This question will be answered by next summer.

How to make a drop down menu with images for blogger page
Say hello to the new mouseover drop down menu. This is a slight modification of the simple dropdown menu tutorial here. To add images simply set up the dropdown menu as described in his post and then add images in front of the text. this will look great on your blogspot or other blog. So for example:
each <li> </li> contains a single menu element. Here is one example.
<li><a
onmouseover="mopen('m3')"
onmouseout="mclosetime()" href="#"><img src="MAIN IMAGE" height="60" />MENU NAME</a>
<div id="m3"
onmouseover="mcancelclosetime()"
onmouseout="mclosetime()">
<a href="YOUR LINK 1"><img src="IMAGE 1 LOCATION" height="30" />LINK1 NAME </a>
<a href="YOUR LINK 2"><img src="IMAGE 2 LOCATION" height="30" />LINK2 NAME </a>
</div>
</li>
If any of this is unclear shoot me an email or comment and I will clarify.
Bonus question! how do I quote HTML in a post without having it be used.
replace, in this order,
"&" with "& amp;"
"<" with "& lt;"
">" with "& gt;"
but remove the spaces i am showing in the quotes
Add a share this post on facebook link to your blog.

casting custom guitar knobs
Attempted casting of guitar knobs. lost foam with a 3/16" drill hole and machine screws going into the sides to hold it tight. The problem was the machine screws are either too loose or tight. casting the threading around the screw is not the way to go. updates to follow if I think of a new way to make this work. I think a tap and die set might be the way to go.

Venus of Willendorf Costume
someone got to this blog searching the term Venus of Willendorf Costume. This is an amazing idea. I think I might go for it this year if I can think of a way to make it happen.
Why did they get here? two posts combined.

can hops (Humulus lupulus) be grown in a pot or container? yes
I had a great first year with my cascade plants but I think the best one was the one out front in a pot. got 6oz (before drying) which was the best of the first year plants. This was in a roughly six gallon container. I am sure the eventually the size limitation will catch up with it and it will be surpassed by the free range plants but pretty good start. This post follow this plant in its second year.
Now the question I have is what to do for next year. Should I repot before winter? give it new soil to work with in the spring? or would messing with the roots make it less hardy for the winter?
FAQ
What size pot should i use for my hops plant?
You can get away with the 5-10 gallon range with reduced yield. The people who seem to get pretty good yeild use half barrels.
how to dry hops with a gas oven
Lots of ways to do this. I spread the cones on a cookie sheet and leave them on the floor of the oven. They get mildly warmed by the pilot light so they dry quick without molding or cooking.
I then rough up the cones a bit daily for a few days. once the seem very dry. I put them in zip lock baggies. Suck out the air as well as I can and throw them in the freezer.

Chocolate hops cupcakes
bonsai coffee tree
This is just getting started but it is a clipping from a coffee plant that I rooted with rooting hormone. So far I pinched of the top leaves so that it would branch and then bent in with a twist tie. the green parts are still bendable but the brown parts are not.
Better photos will follow when the sun is up.
forum discussion of the subject
Here is the plant a 4 or 5 months later with the areas that were bent becoming more woody.

Hydroponic lettuce 500ml square media bottle
Another in the long series of various hydroponic bottles. This is a 500ml square bottle (the kind cell culture media comes in). I cut it in half with a hack saw and flipped the top. This year I let the lettuce go to seed and started some new little plants to do hydroponically. There are a few now but I will split them up when bigger.
Better photo to follow when I find my camera charger.
Obviously don't do this with a bottle that held anything dangerous. My rule is if I would not drink it don't use for hydroponics.
Wine, soda, PBS(as this case), sterile water.... OK.
Acetone, paraformaldehyde, Blush wine..... NO.

Hops brownies/cupcakes recipe (Baking with Humulus lupulus)
What with the abundance of both hops and zucchini that seems to be going on I made a big tray of chocolate zucchini cake modified from the recipe in this thread. Most modifications were based on what I did or did not have around at the time but if you want good zucchini cake you might want to click that link. I did not have enough space in the bread so I made two cupcakes that were augmented with 3 cascade cones ground in each.
Recipe for the Hops Cupcakes extrapolated to a full batch.
2 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of cocoa powder
1/2 cup granulated and 1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1oz dried cascade hops
2 tbs
2 egg
1/3 cup whole milk
4 oz 60% dark chocolate melted
2 cups course ground zucchini
Method:
- Preheat oven at 375F,
- butter cupcake tin.
- Mix melted butter with melted chocolate, sugar, milk, ground hops and egg.
- Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, salt and ground espresso
- Add flour mixture to the butter chocolate mixture in 3 steps, whisking until each addition is reasonably well combined before adding another batch
- Add the zucchini and ripped up hops.
- Bake until knife comes out clean ~30min.
- Add a small cone on top as a garnish.

I think I will be trying this soon on some of the pieces show on this blog. apparently cupric sulfate can do it. I would recomend skipping to the end of the video.
